On December 2007, Dr. (Hons) James T. Riady, The Principal of Yayasan UPH realized his vision by planning to start a performing art program in UPH. And finally in March 2008, Department of Art was established.
Previously under Department Sport and Art, there were 6 Art activities under this department, they are Modern Dance, Saman Dance, Band, Nihon Utopia, UPH Choir, and Photography.
In addition to that existing programs, Department of Art strategically expanded its programs in May 2008 by developing new programs such as Lighthouse Singers, Manna Proxia Theatre, Spirit Dance Company, Nusantara Dance Company, Gusti Tresno Gamelan, Beat of Jericho Percussion, String Ministry Ensemble. These small groups were formed with an expectation to be support groups in staging performing art performances. Therefore, under the strict tutelage of experienced instructors, students are trained and prepared to perform professionally to represent UPH.
It has been an exciting to the first journey. It all started just from a small desk in piano room in MYC. Within the next 3 months, all challenging processes were started, from distributing fliers, auditioning students, sharing dreams, recruiting experienced instructors, production planning, rehearsal process to the performance. And we found this journey were both very exciting and rewarding.
We also acknowledge UPH leaderships: Sheldon Nord, Sudomo, Ferliana Suminto, Stephen Metcalfe, and Connie Rasilim for their supports in the early process.
By the grace of God, Department of Arthas staged more than 200 performances and 10 productions. His blessings were true and real. There were times, we must face many obstacles and challenges in our journey. But these tests has enabled us to grow better and stronger. We simply focus on UPH vision : True Knowledge, Faith in God, and Godly Character, and acknowledge God as this department back bone.
Our prayer is that we could glorify our God Jesus Christ and be the Light and the Salt through Art.
